Printer Troubleshooting

Track: Scanner Care & Troubleshooting

Overview

The Monarch 6059+ has a built-in thermal printer that produces adhesive labels. Most printer issues can be resolved by recalibrating the black mark sensor or cleaning the print head. This lesson covers the most common problems and how to fix them.

Calibrating the Black Mark Sensor

The black mark sensor is how the printer detects where each label starts and ends. If labels are printing off-center, skipping, or feeding incorrectly, recalibrating the sensor is the first step to try.

How to Calibrate

  1. From the ScanIt Parts login screen, tap Settings.
  2. Select Printer Setting.
  3. Select Printer Setup.
  4. Select Supply (described as "Supply/Sensor types and calibration").
  5. Verify that Sensor Type is set to Black Mark.
  6. Tap Calibrate Black Mark Sensor.
  7. Swipe left to return to the main menu.
Important:

Only tap "Calibrate Black Mark Sensor" once. The calibration process may print out one or two blank labels -- this is normal. Do not tap it repeatedly.

Common Printer Problems

Blank labels coming out

If labels print completely blank, the most common causes are:

  • Labels loaded upside down -- Open the cover and flip the label roll so the printable face is toward the print head.
  • Print head dirty -- Adhesive residue or dust on the print head prevents the heat from reaching the label. Clean the print head (see below).
  • Sensor needs calibration -- Run the black mark sensor calibration procedure above.

Faded or light printing

If the text and barcodes are printing but appear faded or hard to read:

  • Clean the print head -- A dirty print head is the most common cause of faded labels.
  • Check energy settings -- In Printer Setup, the Energy option controls how much heat the printer applies. If energy is set too low, printing will be faint. Contact IPS support before adjusting this setting.

Labels skipping or printing in the wrong position

The printer is not detecting the black marks correctly:

  • Run the Calibrate Black Mark Sensor procedure above.
  • Check the Supply Position value in the Supply settings. It should be set to 0 unless IPS support has instructed you otherwise.
  • Make sure the labels are feeding straight through the printer and not at an angle.

Label jams

If labels are jamming inside the printer:

  1. Open the label cover by pressing the release latch.
  2. Carefully remove any jammed labels or adhesive residue.
  3. Check that the label roll is seated properly and feeding straight.
  4. Close the cover and try printing again.
Tip:

If labels jam frequently, check that you are using the correct label size (2" x 2") and that the roll is not damaged or deformed.

Cleaning the Print Head

The print head should be cleaned regularly to maintain print quality. Adhesive residue from labels builds up over time and degrades printing.

What you need

  • A print head cleaning pen or isopropyl alcohol (90%+) on a lint-free cloth

How to clean

  1. Power off the scanner.
  2. Open the label cover by pressing the release latch.
  3. Locate the print head -- it is the thin strip that runs across the width of the label area.
  4. Gently swipe the cleaning pen or damp cloth across the print head from one side to the other. Do not use sharp objects or excessive force.
  5. Allow the print head to dry completely (about 30 seconds).
  6. Close the cover, power the scanner back on, and print a test label.
Caution:

Always power off the scanner before cleaning the print head. The print head generates heat during operation and could cause burns. Never use sharp or abrasive materials on the print head surface.

When to Contact Support

Contact IPS support at 810-695-9332 if:

  • Calibration and cleaning do not resolve the problem
  • The printer makes unusual grinding or clicking noises
  • Error messages appear on the scanner screen related to the printer
  • The print head appears physically damaged (scratched, chipped, or discolored)
